In August 2008, when www.condomcondom.org was launched by the BBC World Service Trust as part of its Condom Normalisation mass media campaign, it was primarily to showcase the campaign and enable people to download the ‘Condom a Cappella’ ringtone. Within the first six weeks, the website got over 3.5 million hits. As a benchmark, it took www.aidsmap.com three years to achieve the same figure and in its first month, the DFID’s www.aidsportal.org received 1/10th of the hit www.condomcondom.org received. It also saw over 200,000 ringtone downloads.
Since then, the Trust’s work on HIV and AIDS has increased substantially. The BBC World Service Trust has been the creative agency for the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). It works on three of NACO’s thematic areas, condoms, STIs (sexually transmitted infections) and blood safety.
So it was time to relook at www.condomcondom.org in the context of showcasing all the work being done to promote ‘safer sex’. The site needed a revamp to widen its scope, make it more interactive, and bring it up to date. And that’s where Ideaz Inc(www.ideazinc.in) came in. They redesigned the site completely and it was relaunched with new content, new look and lots of different ideas in mid-July, just before the international AIDS 2010 Conference in Vienna. Creative Director Radharani Mitra says, “Ideaz Inc. translated our brief very well – we wanted something simple that would grab eyeballs and bring them back again and again. They got it right at the first presentation itself and put it all together in very little time.”
Gurpreet Singh, Creative Director, Ideaz Inc. says – “It was great working with the BBC World Service Trust team. The website presented an interesting challenge – to create a vibrant, interactive experience for visitors to explore the good work that BBC WST has done across multiple campaigns in India. The site leverages social media through the popular Facebook connect platform to enable visitors to comment, like and share content, blogs, videos and photos.”
The website was promoted very actively at the Conference in Vienna. As a result, the website has had close to 200,000 hits in July alone! This is without any campaign-related activity around the website. “The site was a big hit in Vienna. Everyone liked the look and content and also its user-friendliness. Given the high creativity levels at the Conference and the global standards, we took that as a huge compliment”, says Priyanka Dutt, the Project Manager at the Trust.

Unlike various branded Facebook applications, which engage users online; a new application called ‘Play Hard, Party Harder’ aims to engage and connect users with each other in the real world.
The Facebook application has been launched by mobile phone service provider, Airtel. the application has been conceptualised by Rediffusion Y&R and developed by Ideaz Inc. The idea is to enable sports fans to watch events and party together at restaurants or nightclubs in their locality.

To begin with, the application will be used to bring together FIFA World Cup followers or fans. For this, Facebook members will be required to access or sign-in to the application, available at Apps.facebook.com/playhardpartyharder/ and then provide some basic details. For instance, users have to select three football teams they love or hate, enter their location and provide their mobile phone numbers.
After the registration process, the application automatically displays information about other members of the application, who love or hate the same football teams. Thus, users can connect online and add each other as friends.
To hook up with each other in the real world, members will be required to first log-in to the application and then select the match they want to watch. After that, they can access a list of restaurants or nightclubs in their locality, where the match will be telecast on big screens. They also get the facility to check out a list of other members of the application, who will be at a particular restaurant to watch the match.
Airtel will also entice users of the application with special mobile coupons for restaurants or nightclubs, to make offline meetings possible. Everyday, the mobile phone company will send SMSes related to match schedules and venue details of restaurants or nightclubs, along with mobile discount coupons of up to 15 per cent.
“The mobile phone company has tied up with more than 80 food and beverage outlets across six cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai and Pune — where mobile coupons will be accepted,” says Shubho Sengupta, creative head, digital, Rediffusion Y&R!.
He adds, “The idea is to use digital media to tell people to come together and meet offline as well. The application will act as a platform, which will help Facebook users to extend their network of friends.”
Sengupta indicates that the application is a long-term digital property and will be used for other sports events as well, such as the English Premier League (EPL), which is scheduled for August this year. Restaurants in smaller cities, such as Nagpur and Darjeeling, will also be integrated with the application in the next phase.
